Outsider
This little fella has stood watch over the garden for the past 20 years. I picked him up on my travels through South Africa in late 1999, it’s an example of ‘Outsider Art’ made from concrete and old bottle glass. I stumbled across this outdoor gallery, the Owl House deep in the Karoo, a semi-arid desert plain half-way between Cape Town and Jo’burg. An intriguing place, half junk-yard, half sculpture park and very much part of the Outsider scene of which perhaps Watts Towers in LA is the prime example.
Anyway, the wise old owl has survived many a battering but still he endures, a symbol of continuity in an ever-changing world.
